What: H. Roy Kelly designed English Cottage style residence
Where: 373 S Beverly Glen Boulevard

History: In 1929, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence D Coulter, purchased this lot for $9,000 from the Janss Company and hired prominent architect H. Roy Kelly and Escherich Brothers Contractors to complete this residence at an additional cost of $25,000. The style complements its Tudor neighbor (also designed by Kelly) at #383 S Beverly Glen where Mrs. Coulters sister resided.

Architecture: House Beautiful selected and featured this home as a winner of the annual architectural small- house competition in 1932 .This was just one of many national competitions, honors and achievements earned by its influential architect, Mr. H. Roy Kelly. Kelly had a long and varied career that went beyond residential architecture.

He designed the original RAND headquarters in Santa Monica and The Institute for Aeronautical Sciences as well as hospitals, churches and offices. In 1931, Herbert Hoover appointed him to an Advisory Commission on home building that helped to popularize ranch style homes in the West. From 1931 to 1938, H. Roy served on the architectural advisory board of Good Housekeeping Magazine and in 1938, Life Magazine commis- sioned him to design a model home for the nation. During WWII, he designed camouflage for Douglas Aircraft and military installations for the War Department. Kelly also served on architectural advisory committees for Bel-Air and Palos Verdes Estates and designed many Los Angeles residences. This home serves as a good example of his residential work and of 1920s domestic architecture. Its revival style was one of the most popular of the time.
