1.  DWP Update regarding Power Outages

Jerry Nagin, a Holmby Westwood resident, has been actively pursuing answers from the DWP regarding the recent power outages.  Jerry has been in direct contact with the authorities at DWP and is demanding answers.  He has had several conversations with Marvin Moon, a DWP top engineer in the Department and is awaiting a response, which is expected shortly.  We will pass on the information when Jerry receives it.  Mr. Moon also assured Jerry that he is working on providing us with answers to the historical and other questions we raised.
Thank you, Jerry Nagin, for pursuing this issue on our behalf!

2.   Emergency Preparedness Meeting

(ground floor meeting room)

Free parking under the building
For more information, please contact Susan Reuben at susanjreuben@yahoo.com or (310) 271-6700.
3.  Prevent Copper Wire Theft
In recent months, there have been many thefts of the copper wire from the City's street lighting system.  If you observe a wire theft in progress or see any suspicious activity around city streetlights, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Official street lighting maintenance vehicles are yellow, with a city seal and the words "Street Light" on the doors.  Street Lighting staff can be identified by their orange vests, hard hats and city identification.  The Bureau of Street Lighting has contractors who install new lighting.  The names of these companies would be identified on their vehicles.
4.  UCLA Marching Band
The UCLA Marching Band is currently holding its annual Band Camp, which is an intensive training period to perfect their routines.  They have been practicing on the UCLA IM Field.  Practice will continue until Wednesday, September 25th with practice hours ranging from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.  UCLA staff is monitoring the sound and activities to make sure that the impact on neighbors is minimal.

5.   Community Police Advisory Board (CPAB)
The West Los Angeles Community Policy Advisory Board (WLA CPAB) is a volunteer organization committed to work in conjunction with the LAPD in order to foster a partnership to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime, improve the quality of life and ensure the safe and expeditious flow of traffic.  CPAB holds monthly meetings, usually on the fourth Tuesday of the month.  This month's meeting will be held tomorrow night, Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7:00 pm.

6.  UCLA Japanese Garden - Update
We reported some time ago on the controversy surrounding the Hannah Carter Japanese Garden.  Due to budget cuts, UCLA decided to sell the garden following the death of Hannah Carter.  Stating that UCLA agreed to maintain the garden in perpetuity, Carter's heirs filed a lawsuit to permanently prevent the sale.  They then sought and were granted a preliminary injunction in L.A. Superior Court to prevent the sale.  UCLA appealed the injunction, and the 2nd Appellate District of the California Court of Appeal sustained the Supreme Court injunction within the last few weeks.
7.  Automobile Break-In on Westholme
A Prius parked on the 600 block of Westholme Ave. was broken into on Saturday night, Sept. 14.  The front passenger window was smashed.  The compartments were searched for money or electronic devices, of which there was none.  The built-in alarm system did not go off.  A change purse with some coins was not taken, nor was anything else.  This is the second time the same car has been broken into.  This block is traveled by many students going to and from UCLA.
Please be on the lookout for any suspicious activity in the Holmby Westwood area.
8.  Noise near Hilgard
A resident has reported loud noise on the evening of Sept. 16, coming from the vicinity of Manning/Hilgard or possibly Le Conte/Tiverton.  There was loud banging after midnight.  The resident called UCLA campus police who were not aware of any construction or events.  Please let us know if you are aware of the cause of the noise, so that we can address the issue.

1.  Westwood Post Office Update

In a previous communication, I noted rumors regarding our post office at the Federal Bldg., 11000 Wilshire.  I have since received the following information from Congressman Waxman's office:

Our post office in Westwood will be downsizing.  This means that our postal carriers will be assigned to other offices and will be moved according to their zip codes.  Our 90024 carriers will be receiving mail and sorting at the Brentwood Post Office on Barrington.  Vacation hold will be moved to the Barrington post office as well.

PLEASE NOTE:  The Westwood Post Office will keep a retail store open as it is now.  They will sell stamps and accept packages.

The change/move will take place on September 21, 2013.  For further information, please contact Benjamin Baladad, the USPS public contact, at (323) 586-3709.

I am checking if there will still be a drive through where we can drop our outgoing letters in a post box.  Additional info will follow.

Sandy Brown

2.   Westwood LAPD Crime Report

Robbery:
900 block Malcolm Ave (Sidewalk) RD: 828. MO: On 8/28/13, at 2300 hours, the victim was walking on the sidewalk when he was approached from behind by the suspect. The suspect asked the victim for the time and as the suspect did so he spun the victim around grabbing the victim's backpack in the process. The suspect overpowered the victim and forced away his backpack. The suspect then left the location with the victim's backpack. Suspect: Male, Black, black eyes, 5'11" tall, 27-30 yrs old, wearing a beanie with a brim, and a black sweater

3.  Possible Coyote Attack

A resident reported that last Wednesday evening (Aug. 28), around midnight, there was a disturbance near Lomond and Comstock.  It sounded like a fight between animals, possibly a coyote attacking a dog or cat.  This is a reminder to please keep your pets safe inside.

4.  Westwood Library Booksale

Friends of Westwood Used Booksale is coming up on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 10:30 to 3:30.  Come pick up some amazing bargains and help the Friends of Westwood Library raise money to put right back into our beloved library, in the form of new books, computers, programs and more.
