1.  USPS POSTAL SERVICE UPDATE
The Beverly Hills Courier ran an article in the Aug. 28, 2015 edition noting the efforts by Congressman Ted Lieu and his staff to address the many complaints about our postal service forwarded to him by his constituents.
As stated in the article, “The USPS is an independent agency of the federal government formed in July 1971 that is not supported by tax dollars. In recent years, email has steadily reduced the volume of mail, leading the agency to cost-cutting measures which have apparently undermined the efficiency of service. For example, First Class Mail is no longer guaranteed to be delivered in one day. Since January the standards have been increased to two days.”
Residents have complained that there are times when mail is not delivered at all, it is delivered late into the evening hours, neighbors mail is delivered to you, resulting in poor service and mail mishandling.
Congressman Lieu’s staff will be meeting with USPS officials on Sept. 17th to request better service which, if it does not happen, the congressman will bring our issues directly to the postmaster general.
Please continue to send in your comments. Congressman Lieu has set up an email for your convenience:
Thanks to Congressman Ted Lieu and his staff!
Sandy Brown
President, HWPOA
2.  STREET REPAIRS UPDATE
The Bureau of Street Services scheduled a Small Asphalt Repairs (SAR) truck for the Westwood Neighborhood Council District to perform small asphalt repairs one day earlier this week.  All requests that were submitted to HWPOA were inspected by City officials and considered for repair, and the following locations in Holmby Westwood were selected:
  • Charing Cross Rd @ Loring Ave
  • Wyton Dr @ Norcroft Ave
  • Le Conte Ave @ Westholme Ave
  • Lindbrook Dr @ Selby Ave
  • 10717 Lindbrook Dr
We received the following inspection notes on several additional locations:
  • Warner Ave/Strathmore – will be referred to District Maintenance
  • Manning between Le Conte/Malcolm – will be referred to Slurry Division
  • 550 S. Beverly Glen – will be referred to District Maintenance
The next “Neighborhood Blitz” of street repairs in Westwood is tentatively scheduled for one day in March 2016.  We will notify everyone at that time and accept new repair requests.
If you would like to submit a street repair request in the meantime, you may do so at the link below.  Submitting a request is not a guarantee of repair, but it’s worth a try.
Bureau of Street Services – Service Request Form:
http://bss.lacity.org/request.htm
3.  STOP SIGN/WHITE STREET LINES
As you know, wherever there is a stop sign, there is also a white line in the street as an indication of where to stop. In the last few years, many of our streets have been repaved or slurried. In most cases the white lines have been restored. In some they have not.
We need to compile a list of streets where the lines have not been restored. We are already aware of several locations (Comstock at Loring heading west; Club View Drive at Beverly Glen).
Please email Dana at hwpoa@aol.com with any additional locations that you see so that we can submit this list and have them restored.   Thank you.
4.  RELAXED PARKING DURING THE JEWISH HOLIDAYS
We have requested relaxed parking restrictions in Westwood during the upcoming Jewish holidays.  The Council Office has assured us that parking will be relaxed in our community as it has been done in past years.  We wish you a happy and sweet New Year! L’ Shanah Tovah!
5.  NATURAL HAZARDS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
If you are interested in finding out about natural hazards, including earthquakes, in Holmby Westwood, log on to:
Enter your street address and city. The site will tell you if your house is in HIGH Ground Shaking, a Hazard zone, a Liquefaction Seismic Hazard zone, or an Earthquake Fault zone. It will give you an Earthquake Checklist and recommended actions for your Ground Shaking Intensity.

1.  VALET ORDINANCE AMENDMENT
GOOD NEWS! Homeowners’ living on the north east streets of our community have been plagued by valet companies using this section of the neighborhood as a parking lot for Bel Air events for the last three years are finally going to get some relief.
Working with Councilman Koretz and his staff, in particular Katherine Hennigan, Jeffrey Ebbenstein, and the Police Commission, LA City Council today, passed an amendment to the valet ordinance which will now permit the police commission to require that valet companies servicing these events seek authorization and submit a parking plan. We will keep you informed as to the specifics of the plan.
For those of you who don’t know, this has taken almost three years to see to completion and was done with the work and support of the board of your homeowners’ association. The frequency, safety issues and disruptions caused by the valet companies, makes this a most welcome victory for our neighborhood and we look forward to it’s implementation going forward.
2.  DROUGHT-TOLERANT LANDSCAPING COMMITTEE
A number of residents have expressed concern regarding what to do with the grass on their parkways during the drought.  We are forming a committee to research alternatives and to make recommendations regarding drought-tolerant landscaping.  We already have several volunteers, but are looking for a few more people to join the committee.
If you would like to join the committee, please contact Dana at
hwpoa@aol.com.
3.  JULY 4th IS ALMOST HERE!
The countdown has begun!!!   Everyone has her/his orders, manual, and instructions.   Weather lookin’ great.   Fire trucks in a holding pattern.  Families are finding their red, white, and blue attire. Bikes, strollers, dogs, and scooters are about to turn into those great American 4th of July colors!
Strike up the band! Esther (the great) Magna and her amazing team, Caron Schwartz, Rachelle Guerin, Rochelle Glucksman, Randie Kleinman, and Katherine Meyer declare the parade is about to start!
What a fantastic job!!!
Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!
Thank you to every one of our generous donors!!
Best of luck and enjoy the day!!!

5.  RECENT THEFTS IN HWPOA
HWPOA received two reports of crimes in the neighborhood last week:
Purse stolen from car on Comstock – A resident on Comstock reported that on Thursday, June 18 at 2:30 PM, she parked her car in the driveway and left her purse on the front passenger seat while she ran inside for 5 minutes.  The car was unlocked at the time.  This is a reminder to never leave a purse or wallet in your car, even when the car is parked on your own property for a very short period of time. In addition, cars should always be locked and never left open.
Plant theft on Conway – A resident on Conway reported that in the middle of the night on June 24, three more fresh plantings were removed from their front lawn, dug right out of the ground.
6.  UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS
American Band Music Concert @ Westwood Library – Sunday, June 28 at 2:30 PM.  Get a head start on the 4th of July with this fun concert of American band music by the Brass Pacifica Quintet! Fun for the whole family, the program includes a potpourri of Americana, patriotic and Jazz favorites—Gershwin, Copland, Sousa, and more!
The Majestic Crest – June 26 & 27.  The Crest Theater on Westwood Blvd. is a city of Los Angeles historic landmark that our neighbors, the Westwood Homeowners Association were instrumental in saving for the Westwood community. Movies are now being shown again and this weekend they will have a special multimedia presentation by Composer, Producer and Beatles Expert, Scott Freiman: “Deconstructing the Beatles.” Friday’s show is “A Trip Through Strawberry Fields” and Saturday will be “Tomorrow Never Knows: Deconstructing the Beatles’ Revolver.”
Sanitation Open House  – Saturday, June 27.   LA Sanitation is hosting a series of Open Houses at your local district refuse yard  from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Come join the dynamic duo “Mr. Recycle” and sidekick “Robo Blue” as they jump into action to serve family fun, food and prizes for kids.  For more information, please click here
