Homeowners’ living on the north east streets of our community have been plagued by valet companies using this section of the neighborhood as a parking lot for Bel Air events for the last three years are finally going to get some relief.Working with Councilman Koretz and his staff, in particular Katherine Hennigan, Jeffrey Ebbenstein, and the Police Commission, LA City Council today, passed an amendment to the valet ordinance which will now permit the police commission to require that valet companies servicing these events seek authorization and submit a parking plan. We will keep you informed as to the specifics of the plan. For those of you who don’t know, this has taken almost three years to see to completion and was done with the work and support of the board of your homeowners’ association. The frequency, safety issues and disruptions caused by the valet companies, makes this a most welcome victory for our neighborhood and we look forward to it’s implementation going forward.2. DROUGHT-TOLERANT LANDSCAPING COMMITTEEA number of residents have expressed concern regarding what to do with the grass on their parkways during the drought. We are forming a committee to research alternatives and to make recommendations regarding drought-tolerant landscaping. We already have several volunteers, but are looking for a few more people to join the committee. If you would like to join the committee, please contact Dana at

RECENT THEFTS IN HWPOAHWPOA received two reports of crimes in the neighborhood last week:Purse stolen from car on Comstock – A resident on Comstock reported that on Thursday, June 18 at 2:30 PM, she parked her car in the driveway and left her purse on the front passenger seat while she ran inside for 5 minutes. The car was unlocked at the time. This is a reminder to never leave a purse or wallet in your car, even when the car is parked on your own property for a very short period of time. In addition, cars should always be locked and never left open.Plant theft on Conway – A resident on Conway reported that in the middle of the night on June 24, three more fresh plantings were removed from their front lawn, dug right out of the ground.6. 8. HWPOA Contact Information1. LAPD CRIME REPORTThe Los Angeles Police Department recommends the following tips to help secure your home and harden the target.· ALARMS: Ensure that security alarms are in good working order and set when not at home whether leaving for 10 minutes or 10 hours.
· ALARM RESPONSE: Consider a private patrol alarm response to enhance your current alarm and security system. In many cases private patrols are already contracted in many neighborhoods or associations.
· SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS: Web based surveillance camera systems will allow homeowners to view and monitor activity from any smartphone or computer which are motion sensor activated and will alert your device when there is activity. They also lend valuable information and clues to the investigation.
· MOTION SENSOR LIGHTING: Install motion sensor lighting around your home to illuminate normally dark areas around the home. This will also alert residents to outside activity around the home when motion lights are activated.
· GATES: Ensure that all gates and access points to the side or rear of the residence are locked and secured.
· DOOR AND WINDOW LOCKS: Ensure that all doors and windows are locked and secured with sturdy secured locks and that there are second locking mechanisms securing all doors and windows as a second line of defense.
· MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU’RE HOME…Even when you’re not.
· NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH: Monitor suspicious activities in your neighborhood and alert your neighbors. Should the activity escalate to a crime about to occur, crime in progress or crime that just occurred, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!
· SECURITY PATROLS: Consider after hours on site security at construction sites or major remodel projects. Many neighborhoods contract with private security patrols which monitor neighborhoods and can quickly respond to burglar alarm activations or reports of suspicious activity when they occur.Burglary:
900 block of Westholme Ave (RD 0828): On 06/16/15, between 1:30pm-5:00pm, unknown suspect(s) cut the screen located on the side of the secured front door. No entry was gained or property taken.2. PLANT THEFTA resident on the 300 block of Conway planted some drought tolerant plants in their front yard. They reported that two nights in a row last week, thieves made off with the plants with surgical precision. Please be mindful of any suspicious activities and take appropriate measures.3. LAX TRAFFIC SURVEYThe City of Los Angeles is in the planning stages of building a connection between LAX and our transportation system, including transporting passengers to a new facility where you can rent a car, catch a bus or hop on a Metro train. The facility will make it easier for people to get to and from LAX and will get cars off the road. Please visit http://beatlaxtraffic.com/ and take a few moments to play the new interactive survey game to let them know how you get to and from LAX and about your dream scenario for traveling to the airport.
