1.   Plastic Bag Ban
Earlier this year, on a motion by Councilmember Paul Koretz, the City Council approved a new ordinance to ban plastic grocery bags.  Starting on January 1, 2014, supermarkets, mini markets, drug stores, convenience stores, etc. will be prohibited from providing plastic (or paper) single-use carryout bags.  Stores will have single-use, recyclable, paper bags available but will be required to charge $0.10 for each bag.
Currently, this only affects large grocery stores and other large stores that carry groceries (such as Target).  Smaller grocery stores will be subject to the ban on July 1, 2014.  For additional information, please click here: <http://lacitybag.com>
2.   Beware of New Tree Pest
A resident recently hired a tree service to fertilize their trees and the service discovered that three sycamores had been invaded by the Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer, a new species of beetle in Southern California.  The residents were told that if left untreated, the trees would die.  Fortunately, they were able to treat their trees and probably caught the problem in time.
3.   Car Break-In
A resident reported that on the evening of December 11th, their Prius was parked on the 300 block of Conway, under a street light, overnight.  The next morning, they found the driver's side window shattered and the center console lid open.  Nothing was visible, or stowed away, so nothing was taken.  The car alarm did not go off.  The residents called ACS  and the LAPD to file a report.
FYI, the mobile window replacement technician told them there has been a rash of this type of vandalism...in particular on the Prius.  This is because the newest Prius model's alarm only trips if a door is open.  Window sensors are not available yet.
4.   Mayor’s Survey
Mayor Eric Garcetti has created a survey for Los Angeles residents in an effort to find better ways to solve problems in different LA neighborhoods.  If you would like to participate, please click here:  <http://www.lamayor.org/resolution>
5.  Wilshire Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project - 2014
This project was approved earlier by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO).  It will convert curb lanes into bus-only lanes during the morning and afternoon peak travel hours.  Construction on the segment from Western Avenue to San Vicente Boulevard is expected to start in January, 2014 with completion in the winter of 2015.
The segment between Comstock and Selby on the north and south sides of Wilshire is NOT included is this bus-only lane plan.  That part of Wilshire in the cities of Beverly Hills and Santa Monica is also NOT included in this plan.
Once the project has been completed, cars will not be allowed in these lanes during peak morning and evening hours UNLESS drivers will be turning right at the next corner.  If you are in the bus-only lane (curb lane) and do NOT turn right at the corner, you are subject to a ticket and fine.
We will update you on this issue as construction begins.
6.  HWPOA COMMUNICATION AND AD POLICY
Please direct all comments, questions or issues regarding the HOLMBY NEWS tohwpoa@aol.com and not to holmbywestwood@yahoogroups.com.
Residents have complained about too many HWPOA emails during the week so I, as Moderator, try to limit HWPOA messages during the week, ads in particular, to posting in the weekly NEWS.  Emergency type situations such as coyote sightings, lost and found pets, traffic alerts and similar emergency type situations will continue to be published during the week as received.
This policy will be published each week preceding the Resident Ads section of the HOLMBY NEWS as a reminder of the policy, how to place the ads and why the policy was established.  There is always an exception considered if needed for an emergency type ad situation.
When placing an ad, please send to hwpoa@aol.com for the HOLMBY NEWS Moderator to review.  The receipt of the ad will be confirmed.  Responses to ads should be directed to the ad placer, not to HWPOA.  Do not respond to the holmbywestwood Yahoo email address.
Thank you,
Dana, HOLMBY NEWS moderator/editor
7.  RESIDENT ADS
POODLE FOR ADOPTION
Adorable white male poodle is available for adoption. "Buddy" (the name given to him by his rescuer) is a male miniature Poodle approximately 5 years young, neutered and housebroken, very calm, sweet and gentle.  He has had all his shots, full blood panel showing his health is excellent, as well been supplied with a Micro Chip. He was found running loose on Century Blvd near LAX. He has been shaved in that his coat was matted and really filthy. He has also had a full flea bath just as a precaution.  Buddy is also fully house broken. He needs a good home with someone with the patience to make him feel comfortable. He does have the propensity of darting out and cannot be trusted at this point to not be on a leash, this will take some time until he gets used to his surroundings.  Buddy is friendly will dogs and kids and has a very sweet disposition.  Contact Doug at 310-729-4500

GARAGE DOOR REPAIR SERVICE NEEDED
I'm looking for a reliable garage-door-opener repair service.  Hopefully, someone will have a recommendation for me.
