1.   COYOTE ALERT
A large coyote was recently spotted in several areas of Holmby-Westwood:
·         At the corner of Le Conte-Westholme-Glenmont
·         Running along Strathmore Dr., from Hilgard towards Warner Ave.
·         On Woodruff near Charing Cross
·         On Loring, Bainbridge and Conway
Some of these sightings occurred in the morning hours (around 7:00 AM) and some occurred in the evening (5-7:00 PM).  One resident shouted at the coyote but the coyote didn’t seem scared.
Please use precautions to keep our neighborhood safe.  Be sure to keep your small pets indoors, particularly at night.  Do not leave dog or cat food out or any other food that might attract these animals.
2.   WESTWOOD LA – DOCUMENTARY SCREENING
You are invited to a free debut screening of the documentary film Westwood LA on Tuesday, April 22, at 6:30 pm at the Westwood Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, 1246 Glendon Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90024.  A question and answer session with the film’s creator, Rick Meghiddo will follow the screening.
Featuring testimonials from residents of the Westwood neighborhood, Westwood LA provides viewers with an overview of Westwood’s evolution since the mid-1800s, while revealing challenges for its future. The Westwood LA trailer is available for viewing here: <http://westwoodmovie.com> .

4.   PHONE SCAMMERS POSING AS LADWP
ALERT – Persistent phone scammers are deceiving LADWP customers into paying non-existent water and power bills with threats of immediate service shut off.  Don’t fall victim to phone scammers posing as LADWP “collection” personnel.
·         LADWP employees will NEVER ask for personal payment information over the telephone.  They will never ask you to purchase pre-paid cash cards from a convenience store to pay your utility bill.
·         Payment by telephone can ONLY happen through the Department’s voice automated payment system, not with live employees.  LADWP personnel do not accept payment information verbally over the telephone.
·         If you get a call asking for a cash card or credit card number or other personal financial information, hang up and call LAPD.
Safety and service excellence are of utmost importance to LADWP.  Victimization of our customers will not be tolerated.  Imposters can expect to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
5.   BEVERLY GLEN REPAVING PROJECT
A 1.63 mile portion of Beverly Glen, from Mulholland Drive to Beverly Glen Place, will be repaving over two consecutive weekends.  The project will  take place on May 17-18 and on May 24-25.
The plan is to divide this into two segments, with full width closures of the project portions. The work will start at the south end and head towards Mulholland Dr.  Residents to the west can use Nicada Drive to access Mulholland; those south of the project will have to enter and exit from Sunset.  Residents who are landlocked without alternate routes will be allowed access but will face some delays. They can also exit to the south or north depending on the progress of the work.
The roadway will be re-opened for traffic once the crew ends work in the afternoon on Saturday and remain open until the next morning when they return. Sunday's paving will require the more stringent traffic control because the repaving will be full width. The crew will not easily be able to move the equipment to allow for straggler cars to enter or exit the area.

4.  BEWARE OF SOLICITORS
From the Christopher Ragsdale, LAPD Senior Lead Officer:
Throughout the city of Los Angeles and the region, we have been receiving many questions and concerns regarding various types of solicitors.
If anyone knocks, calls, emails, texts, or approaches you unsolicited by you, my recommendation is DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR, DO NOT ENGAGE! Respectfully and politely indicate that you are not interested. If the solicitors become persistent or refuse to leave, advise them you are notifying the police and report the details to the Non-Emergency Dispatch at 1-877-275-5273.
Be aware that another trend has been Distraction Burglaries. In these incidents a person posing as a utility worker, roofer or tree trimmer knocks on your front or side door and tells you they need to access your back yard. The suspects will lure you into the back of your residence while a second suspect will enter through the front and quickly ransack areas inside the home seeking small valuables and cash. In most cases the suspects stay in contact and communicate by cellular telephone or two way radios. Other methods of operation have been female suspects who claim their pet or small child went into your backyard.
Recently, I received an email at my LAPD work email indicating that my bank account was compromised and that I needed to log into my accounts to verify my information and credit card information. They provided a format to log in with my user name and password and provided a link. The logos and emblems looked very authentic. This is a phishing scam!
Just to reiterate, if you receive anything from anywhere unsolicited, DO NOT RESPOND!
· Solicitors, regardless of if they are selling a product, seeking a donation or, political in nature, should be turned away.
· If someone knocks on your door and says you have to step out of your home, especially to go to your back yard, CALL 911 Immediately!
· When logging into online accounts always use the saved link on your browser or type in the web address on your own.
· You may report Internet scams and crime to: www.ic3.gov
5.  PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOGS
We continue to receive reports from residents who have said that dog owners have not been responsible in cleaning up after their dogs.  In some instances, the dog owners fail to clean up entirely.  In other instances, the owner will clean up with a plastic bag, but then leave the plastic bag in the same spot.
If you own a dog, please clean up after your dog, and be sure to tell everyone who walks your dog to do the same (this includes family members, dog walkers, housekeepers, nannies, etc.).  Thank you.
6.  HWPOA COMMUNICATION AND AD POLICY
Please direct all comments, questions or issues regarding the HOLMBY NEWS tohwpoa@aol.com and not to holmbywestwood@yahoogroups.com.
Residents have complained about too many HWPOA emails during the week so I, as Moderator, try to limit HWPOA messages during the week, ads in particular, to posting in the weekly NEWS.  Emergency type situations such as coyote sightings, lost and found pets, traffic alerts and similar emergency type situations will continue to be published during the week as received.
This policy will be published each week preceding the Resident Ads section of the HOLMBY NEWS as a reminder of the policy, how to place the ads and why the policy was established.  There is always an exception considered if needed for an emergency type ad situation.
When placing an ad, please send to hwpoa@aol.com for the HOLMBY NEWS Moderator to review.  The receipt of the ad will be confirmed.  Responses to ads should be directed to the ad placer, not to HWPOA.  Do not respond to the holmbywestwood Yahoo email address.
Thank you,
Dana, HOLMBY NEWS moderator/editor
